Spell Checkers Are Dangerous
May 15, 2008 11:13 am En Vrac -- Misc. StuffWay before I started using them, I had to use an online dictionary very often, and consult with Google all the time. And even with that, I would send my emails and reports with plenty of mistakes.
Now that I am using spell checkers, I feel more confident about my writings — online! When I am offline, and that I have to write something ‘important’, my self-esteem goes really low. I haven’t lost any of my spelling abilities, but I became very dependent on spell checkers. I feel a constant need of seeing my writings all clear, with no red curvy underlines.
I have to confess though that I used to feel extremely lazy sometimes to even think and type, so the extent that I only type the main vowels of a word letting the spell checker do all the work for me. It took me a huge panic attack in an important event offline -when I was suddenly unsure about how to write a very common word-, to bring me back to reality, and stop me from relying on spell checkers. I am healed now, and wish you all spell check addicts the same.

It’s like forgetting mathematics after getting used to use calculators where one can hardly make simple calculations a grocer does quickly with no attention.
