The Curse of Technology
December 30, 2007 1:09 pm En Vrac -- Misc. StuffIt started by a few -not too serious- troubles with the hosting company’s server where my blog is safely located. With the period of holidays/celebrations, the time it took to have the problem fixed went by so slowly -like an eternity- before my blog got finally back on track. The widgets were gone, the plugins had to be reactivated… I felt like going back ‘home’ and finding it a bit messy and dusty, but didn’t actually mind it as long as I was ‘back home’.
By that time, my desktop computer started acting up, and just refused to turn on one morning. I thought it crashed. I saw my virtual life flash before my eyes. I saw all my data fade away in the unknown space. I saw me as broken as when I lost my precious Gmail draft, only 36 hundred times worse. Oh wait, I backed everything up just recently. Yay!
I took the computer to the repair, and was told that its power supply was dead. Only that? Phew! Please replace it, I asked.
I had my computer back home the following day. I was too happy and thankful that it didn’t completely crash, that I didn’t mind when the tech guy required some time before he could get to my computer. I am not their only customer after all.
My computer was safely home the following day. I had an errand to run before I could use it, but felt the urge to just turn it on, see my wallpaper and my folders all over its desktop to get some energy for the day, before I could go out again. Plug this, plug that, check everything. Click! It’s turning on, ya… Before I finished my ‘yay’, the machine just stopped. Out of the blue! No warning, no nothing. Click, again! Oh, now it’s turni… No, it’s not! What on earth does that mean? They said it worked fine in the repair. I unplugged everything, and got the computer back to them. It’s the ventilator this time. Oh, what else! I asked for it to be repaired, cleaned or replaced. Whatever it takes. The tech guy added that my computer was all full of viruses and that I should format it. OK, I said. Just get me the thing working again! I required to have my machine an hour later this time.
I ran my errand, and picked up my computer in time. I’ll spend a better evening with my computer home tonight. I started missing it. Super yay, huh? Not that quickly!
When I could finally get to my computer in the evening, it felt strange having it like new (it’s formatted, remember?). I’ll start with the Internet, I decided. Where did I put that CD to install the modem again… Here we go!
Oh nos! Oh nooos! Shoot! The CD player is not working!
I played Solitaire that night. Solitaire!!! How desperate could I be?
Back to the repair the following morning. Thankfully, replacing the CD player was just a matter of minutes. I even replaced it with a CD/DVD Reader/Writer. Which reminded me that I have a computer that’s as old as you can’t imagine. Time to replace it, you’d say? But then again, I almost replaced everything inside that case, if it’s only for a new case, I don’t care…
Having hundreds of unread emails was no fun. Catching up with my favorite blogs turned to be a pain. Besides, I was still expecting something else to happen, like if all that was not enough. I didn’t do much online for some two days, because in the back of my mind, I was still expecting the curse to go on. But I actually couldn’t be more cursed by technology.

Well, I think you should have bought a new PC as the actual one’s too old :p
Seriously, it’s the worst thing for any tech addict. And the worst is when the guy who calls himself technician makes things worse.

Only the case cover of this desktop is old, the rest of it is brand new. :D The keyboard, screen and mouse are mere accessories. :p
Seriously though, I have been inquiring about the prices of desktops and laptops. I found some great deals around, but I do not know enough to get me a perfect deal. The purchase will be heavy enough on my budget, so I don’t want to make a bad choice.
Besides, I am longing for Apple products, but boy are they expensive! *Sigh*

Me too, once I’ll have enough money. I want to switch to Apple especially for video works… HEY! I’m doing advertising here! I leave now.
Happy new year ;)

LOL! Lalla Mira, I truly sympathize with you on this. I just never realized how much blogging and surfing that I do on the net until I started having hosting problems.
I didn’t play solitaire, but I just munched like there was no tomorrow :)

What are we without our computers! :)
I was not in the mood for munching, so I seized the opportunity to catch up on sleep, and tidy up around. :)
