Play & Donate Rice

10:05 pm En Vrac -- Misc. Stuff

FreeRice is a website that helps you improve your vocabulary -no matter how your high is your level in English-, while it enables you to donate rice to the hungry. The rice is actually paid for by the advertisers seen on the bottom of the vocabulary screen, like Toshiba, iTunes, Fujitsu and many others.

rice-donation.bmp

Imagine if each person of us who uses the Internet daily plays this vocabulary game, and sets a goal of reaching a few hundred grains of rice. You’d find yourself sponsoring a hungry person and feeding her all year long.

That made me wonder: How many grains do you think make a kilogram of rice? Thank God there is Google, that led me to FunTrivia. So the answer is 50 000 grains.
Now, how many kilograms are enough to feed one person per year? Wikipedia says it’s one koku, equivalent of 150 kilogram
s.
So, basically, to feed one person all year long, we need 7 500 000 grains, or around 20 547 grains per day.
On FreeRice, every word that you guess correctly is worth 10 grains, so we need to score around 2 054 *words* per day to reach our goal.

free-rice.bmp

My average score is *10* words, or 100 grains, per minute. That means one needs around 200 minutes daily to sponsor a hungry child, and feed him/her all year long. If only ten people commit to 20 minutes daily, it will be enough to feed one person. This sounds amazing! Done from the comfort of your home, and in such a short time… Maybe 20 minutes sounds like a long break from work for some of you, so have it done during 4 short breaks of 5 minutes each.
I personally believe this will be an amazing achievement, especially if I commit to doing it every day.

While I think the idea of FreeRice is brilliant, I have no guarantee about its accuracy. Does anyone have an idea?
I will feel better if I am sure 100% they really donate rice in compensation of the time I spend on the website.
FeedRice say they are a sister website of Poverty.com; is that enough of a guarantee, you think?

Let me know your opinion, and if you’d commit to donating 2 054 grains a day to sponsor a hungry child.

rice-donated.bmp

FreeRice says they are donating over 3 500 000 grains of rice daily, so according to my calculations, they are feeding 170 persons yearly. That’s wonderful, but still not enough!

How I wish we’d be thousands to work together on that…

Edit: This post was slightly edited to correct some numbers. Thanks to Rory who pointed it out in the comments.

This is a brillant idea (incidentally this website led me to your blog rather than the other way round ;) that is brillantly executed, I’m only sorry I haven’t heard about it earlier (would anyone happen to know how long it has been running?) And I don’t doubt that the site has been down, from what I hear word of mouth is spreading the news like wildfire (which is awesome :D).

In reference to the reliablilty of the program, I am not concerned. I have checked it out a little and it is linked to some very large and obviously concerned and dedicated programs, and also the fact that it has a lot of major corporations sponsoring implies that is well founded.

I have always had a decent sized vocabulary, and was delighted to find that this site has challenged me quite severely :) I find myself hovering around 41-43 but have only reached a high of 45 :( I make it my aim to reach 50 at least once :D

This is incredibly addictive (SCREW STUDY :P) I have donated 25-30,000 over the past 2 days, if only I could keep it up indefinitely, but unfortunately exams will come around sooner or later.

  13. Lalla Mira :

    Date: October 21, 2007 @ 4:32 pm

@Matt: FreeRice led you to my blog? Cool! I mean… I am not one of their sponsors yet, not that I know. LOL!

I believe this website was created only a couple of months ago, I have no idea how the idea started out, but people seem to discover it just recently.

FR are probably using extra servers to handle all the traffic I am sending to them, LOL!

I also remember reaching around level 40-something, but then words started sounding more alien to me. 40 is not bad for a non-native speaker.

Bear in mind that it’s rare for people to reach level 50 (even native speakers), so you might be aiming a little bit high, and you’re having exams coming soon… Doesn’t sound good! :p

30000 in 2 days? You are have become a big FR addict indeed, LOL! You’ve donated enough rice to feed one person for about 2 weeks. Well done!

Good luck with your exams! :)

  14. Matt :

    Date: October 21, 2007 @ 4:56 pm

Yes, I was trying to find out how much rice it would take to make a difference and Google liked you :P

According to their website it has only been going since the 7th of Oct. Have a look at http://www.freerice.com/totals.html
I am struggling to get my head around those numbers…talk about exponential! Now by my calculations, 40,000,000 grains would feed 20,000 people! Which is amazing because FRs sister site Poverty.com says about 25,000 people die every day from hunger, which means that if enough people (give it a week!) started clicking then we could potentially eradicate death due to hunger, and then hunger itself! And all from the comfort of our own homes, through A WEBSITE!!! Mindboggling really

Indeed, they must really be struggling if the above numbers are anything to go by!

40 for a foreigner is not bad at all, well done!

I’ll try to get there, even if I have to memorize or fluke my way through it :P Seriously though I think I can get there with some effort, already I am starting to notice my ability to pick out Latin roots has gone through the roof :) Maybe with some luck :)

Hehe it has been interesting, but I am trying to play less, and console myself my spreading the news to others :)

    Thanks :)

Glad to know that there are other people out there who stumble across FreerRice, and think about how much donation is enough to feed a person. :)

As the website was still down in my end, I tried to know when the domain name was bought. :D That was months ago indeed, but glad to know the initiative has been up for a couple of days only, makes me feel like I haven’t missed much. :)

It helps me increase my score on FR, to be have questions about Latin words, since I speak French, I easily recognize most of the words asked about. ^^

  16. Lalla Mira :

    Date: October 21, 2007 @ 5:48 pm

By the way, they must have added the ‘totals’ page only today, or yesterday. On the 18th, that banner showed that ‘only’ 3.500.000 grains of rice are donated daily, and now it says that 16.000.000 was donated ONLY yesterday! Tremendous progress! Way to go FR!

lalla, although i agree that freerice.com is a really great idea and that, if large enough numbers of people use the site, it can really make a difference, your maths are a bit wrong when you estimate how much time per day is needed to sponsor one person. if one person needs around 20,000 grains per day, and you average 100 grains per minute, then that means you would need to spend 200 minutes per day to feed one person, not 20. 20*100=2000. remember, the score you get on the website is already in grains of rice, it goes up by 10 each time. however, what it does mean is that a group of 10 people could easily feed one person by playing 20 mins per day each, which in itself is a great accomplishment.

  22. Lalla Mira :

    Date: November 11, 2007 @ 8:35 am

Here is where I messed it up:
    - My estimation is that we need 20 547 grains of rice donated daily to feed one hungry person all year long.
    - On FreeRice, every word that you guess correctly is worth 10 grains, so we need to score around 2 054 *words* not grains of rice per day to reach our goal. It’s here where I made the mistake.
    - My average score is 10 words [not 100, my bad again], or 100 grains per minute.
    - For 20 minutes daily, we can feed one person if we work as a team of 10 persons.

Thanks a lot for pointing this mistake out, Rory. :)

    Lalla Mira,
I came to know about Free rice site today only and have started playing. Really gr8 idea. Have donated 910 grains today. After playing for this while I started wondering how many grains are required to feed one hungry person etc etc. and Thanks to Google I came across your blog.

I really liked reading your post and all my doubts are answered in one go. Thanks for providing all the information.

I am just managing in 30 levels between 30 - 35. I am hoping to donate 1000 grains a day

  24. Lalla Mira :

I see that FreeRice got you too wondering about questions such as how many grains of rice there are in a kg of rice, and how much is enough to feed a person. I receive daily visits from people like you and me who ask such questions.

FreeRice is blooming in a surprising way! Check their totals to see how much people are donating daily. It’s amazing!

You have donated 10000 grains of rice. Wow! Now THAT is impressive!
You have donated 20000 grains of rice. Wow! We’re speechless!
You have donated 30000 grains of rice. Wow! We’re STILL speechless!
You have donated 40000 grains of rice. Wow! We’re STILL speechless!
You have donated 50000 grains of rice. Wow! We’re STILL speechless!
You have donated 60000 grains of rice. Wow! We’re STILL speechless!
You have donated 70000 grains of rice. Wow! We’re STILL speechless!
You have donated 80000 grains of rice. Wow! We’re STILL speechless!
You have donated 90000 grains of rice. Wow! We’re STILL speechless!
You have donated 100000 grains of rice. May you have a lifetime of happiness…

heh, lifetime of happiness for 100k grains. nice.

score restarts from 0 after 100k.

    p.s., yes, i fed 1/75th of a person for a year. :)

    Hey there!

I found out about this game about an hour or two ago from a friend. I got addicted before I even knew what it was really about (I’m a huge fan of words in general, and considering I have SATS coming up…!). I got over 3k grains before I looked around the site and wondered how much of a difference my playing was making. After a Google search, I got here.

Well, as it turns out, I haven’t just fed a person for a year…. But it warms my heart to know I fed someone something for a day. =) And good job with the research!

  38. Joy Al-Sofi :

    Date: November 24, 2007 @ 7:37 am

I found out about this site last night and have donated about 10,000 grains in two tries. I verified its legitimacy by following links provided on the UN website to the WFA site and from there to freerice. WFA also gives the totals received from freerice. Quite impressive. The site began on October 7, just last month and they have given a lot already. I’ve already put a link to it on my website and I plan to pass the info on about it to others, including my students.

It is good to know that they do do something at major milestones of amounts, but some of us can’t do it in one session, so a cumulative totaling method would be nice, but perhaps take up too much bandwidth.

  39. Lalla Mira :

    Date: November 24, 2007 @ 8:51 pm

@Joy: I must say that I don’t always have time to play daily, so when I finally have some time to go to FreeRice, I try to play for all the other times I couldn’t do it.
10 000 grains in one day are a great donation. Keep up the good work. :)

Hi, the boys in my year 5 class found the websire when researching about child pverty. They became so committed to raising grains, we began by using our ICT lessons to play, as well as everyone playing at home and adding their totals each day. They began a campaign to get the whole school involved and we have just had ‘free rice week’. As our school runs from reception to year 12, the primary school each donated a lesson to playing and the senior school opened computing rooms at lunch time so the big boys could play. The year 5’s made badges to reward their fellow students for playing and created a ‘Rice-o-meter” to keep everyone informed of the total. To date, the boys have raised about 350,000 grains

  41. Lalla Mira :

    Date: November 25, 2007 @ 5:58 pm

That’s really impressive Leni. I suggest that you make a report of your volunteer work on FeeRice, illustrated with pictures, and send it to FreeRice or any of their sister websites. They really should know that they are doing a good job, and so are you!

It’s a pity we missed the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on October 17th. Playing FreeRice would make a nice way to celebrate it.
Imagine if we got a few schools like yours volunteer with FreeRice, and play during that day and donate as much rice as possible.

  42. Dani :

Probably because they got more companies interested in their project, and in the number of page views of the website. Have you noticed the new ads?

Happy new year to you, Dani, and to everyone who passed by here. :)

  44. Sarbazeirani :

    Date: January 11, 2008 @ 11:04 am

i did my own calculations and i can feed one person 22,000 grains of rice (amount necessary to survive) for one day by playing for 2 hours. i get 9 words right per minute, which is 562 words per hour, which is 11250 grains per hour. 1 kg of rice is 50,000 grains. 160 kg rice feeds one person for one year. thats equal to about 8 million grains of rice for one year, which is 22000 grains per day. assuming that i get 11250 grains per hour, that means i can feed one person for one day by playing for 2 hours. I am going to calculate the price of 1 kg rice, and see how much it costs. I can also find out how much rice freerice.com buys in one day. Since freerice.com is a non-profit organization, assuming that all the money goes toward buying rice, i can find out how much they are making off every advertisement. kinda cool, eh?

  45. Sarbazeirani :

    Date: January 11, 2008 @ 11:30 am

actually, i do much much much more than that. i have fed 8 people today (meaning i have donated 2.5 kg or 176000 grains of rice just today). if i play for one month, i will have fed 240 people for one day, or 8 people for one month. if 10,000 other played this way, we could have fed 80,000 people for one month or 2,400,000 people for one day. if 16000 children die of hunger each day (Hunger Facts: International) , we have kept them all of them alive for another 5 months. and all i did was keep my computer on.

ask me how i did it.
